Behind the Scenes for a Project

CYK-ShowI’m very excited to announce that The Conquer Your Kryptonite Show has moved from dream to plan to execution!

Having a podcast has been on my radar for several years, but I finally let it become a specific project in my overall strategic plan.  This is no accidental show…it’s taken a lot of planning and effort to make it happen.

Behind the Scenes

Starting a podcast was a part of my 40 Before 40 list in 2013.  But I didn’t get serious about it until late in the year.  My friend Bret Farmer (owner of Podcast Conduit) offered to produce the show, and we even recorded a test episode in December 2013.  The timing just wasn’t right though, so I intentionally put the project on the back burner for a while.

A few weeks turned into a few months.  Plenty of real-world, family and life stuff transpired.  Still, it was there just waiting to be picked up and executed.

I was having fun doing interviews on other people’s podcasts, including Entrepreneur on Fire with John Lee Dumas, The Ethical Entrepreneur with Clayton Morris, and Starve the Doubts with Jared Easley.  Jared encouraged me to support and attend the first Podcast Movement conference in Dallas in August, and that relit the fire!

Being at a conference with so many other entrepreneurs who had active shows made me feel left out.  More importantly I saw the power of podcasting for my business.  So I got serious, started working and now the show is live.

I approached my friend and long-time accountability partner Megan Burns about co-hosting the show with me.  We developed a show structure, mapped out a few episodes, and started recording.  Bret Farmer agreed to produce the show for us and help get it out there.  Having a team of people working together is so much more powerful than doing it all alone.

Now Megan and I plan out our episodes and record a few shows at a time.  Bret set up the digital infrastructure and cleans our “ums” and “ahs” as best he can.  The ball is rolling and we’re getting better at it as we go.  And we’re having fun as well.

Expenses are minimal as we use the equipment we have and upgrade a little at a time.  It’s an experiment and I believe it’s a good one.

And I still hope our first show is our worst show, and our latest show is always our best show.

Everything is About to Change

Since my last post, I’ve been focusing hard in the background of my business.

I’ve been helping people wherever I can, including a variety of free one-on-one coaching calls, comments on social media, and even video production for friends. It’s been about service and it’s been a lot of fun.

But I never forgot that this is a business as well. It needs to make money to qualify.

Things are going to be changing a lot soon. I can’t say when because I’m not sure how long it’s going to take to make it happen. But business and life are shifting, and hopefully for the better. If all goes well I’ll be helping people more than ever, and getting paid for it even more. The value will be there.

What’s not changing is my commitment to helping small business owners do business better. I’m excited about the future and I hope you’ll stick around for the ride.

It’s going to be interesting.

Take the Value-Added Challenge

I was on a mastermind call last week and one of my accountability partners mentioned that in the midst of a revenue crunch, he was changing his approach. Instead of worrying about income goals, he would be focused instead on the value he provided.

As business owners we have to always be aware of the bottom-line. It’s not a business if it’s not about making money (and it won’t be around long if you don’t eventually make enough!).

But if that’s the only thing we think about, it can send us down a bad path.

Here’s why a value-added approach is important:

We Focus on Service

Getting paid is great. I love to get paid and it allows me to keep doing what I love to do. But the best way to get paid and keep getting paid is to do great work. I will focus on serving my clients needs and giving great value instead of counting dollars for hours of work.

We Focus on Quality

There’s a lot of junk out there. We buy a lot of it and it breaks or fails to do what it promises more often than not. I want to give my clients the best of what I have to offer. I want them to be blown away by the experience and the results that they get. It’s never perfect, but high quality means high value.

We Avoid a Scarcity Mentality

It’s easy to pursue any and every client opportunity when you’re desperate. But the truth is that what you offer is not always the best fit for every potential client you meet. Be selective, and if you aren’t a fit together, refer them to who you believe will be. And when in doubt, serve them well. Give them something of value, even if you don’t sell them a single thing. It can be as simple as a smile, some advice, your respect, and a little kindness. Don’t hold back.
