On Monday I made my book, Conquer the Entrepreneur’s Kryptonite, free for Kindle on Amazon.com. I learned two big things that are good for my readers that I should have known going into it, but didn’t.
#1: Free Sharing!
If you download the Kindle version of my book, even during the free days, you can then lend it to other people even if they missed out this week. Crazy, right!
Well, I’m not concerned because if someone is willing to first download it, and second recommend it, and third loan it to a friend, that friend is very likely to read it.
I want my book to be read. I know it will help people. And I’m all about helping people.
So why not make the book free all the time? Because people just don’t value free books, and most free books don’t get read (even for the thousands of downloads I’m getting, I’ll be lucky if 10% read it and 1% review it…another 0.1% may be interested in coaching with me).
#2: Discounted Audiobook!
The second big surprise is that if you own the Kindle version of my book, you can get the Audible audiobook version for $1.99 instead of $14.99.
Again, I didn’t know this going in and was surprised (okay, shocked) at first. But I’m not worried about the lost revenue on a few books. Instead of a few bucks, I’ll make a few cents. But if more people decide to opt in on the $1.99 audiobook, I could end up making more in the long run.
And it helps people. They hear my voice, hopefully like it, and then want to know more and eventually do some coaching.
Business is about experimentation. I’m experimenting with five days of my book being free on Kindle. Surprises like this happen, but in this case it’s good.
It’s good for my readers. It’s good for me. And I love a Win-Win situation!
